Service Description: Polygons of buffers created and merged at 25, 50, and 75ft around the visible surface water at Kirsop Farm and Community Farmland Trust lands in April 2023.
Stream buffer polygon features analyzed by ESRI's buffer tool based on visible surface water polygons created by Danielle Lazarus as an overlay on ground control point (GCP) corrected Mavic 2 drone imagery collected on April 3, 2023 by Mike Ruth with support from Evergreen MES grad students Danielle Lazarus and Matthew Einhorn. Stream buffers included are Scatter Creek and an unnamed and intermittent stream. The intermittent stream is currently not included in DNR and USGS hydro geodatasets.
The layer was merged from 3 different layers at the 25ft, 50ft, and 75ft width in order to compare current riparian buffer (or setback) to different buffer widths. It includes the width of the visible surface water layer in addition to the buffer widths. Because the unnamed stream is intermittent, its width is variable or nonexistent at other times of the year, and visible surface water polygons shouldn't replace on the ground measurements for official purposes. They are an estimate for help in planning, and so are the buffers created on this layer. Buffer width requirements vary based on what administrative body is involved. Federal or local conservation guidelines may vary. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recommends a minimum of 100ft riparian buffer from the channel bankful width, projected channel migration zones, or active floodplain for water quality purposes, and ideally a width of 1 Site Potential Tree Height at 200 years (SPTH200) to maintain wider ecological benefits to fish and wildlife, including salmon ("Riparian Ecosystems", Volumes I and II, WDFW, 2020).
This layer overlaps with the visible surface water, streamline, farm fields, roads and pavement, grounds, and buffers and hedges layers.
