Trawl - provided by CDFW
Data concerning each commercial landing is recorded on receipts by fish dealers or processors at the time of delivery and then transmitted to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) where they are digitally recorded. For each transaction, the dealer must provide data concerning the species, weight, and price paid to the fisherman. The date of the transaction, the fisherman’s name, the fishing vessel registration number, and intended use for the fish (canning, fresh, etc.) is also required. In addition, the type of gear and the fishing location (block) for the reported catch are recorded. Fishing blocks are spatially distinct grid cells within marine waters used for data collection and statistical analysis.
This dataset shows the averaged total metric tons reported annually by trawl nets (bottom trawl, midwater trawl, Danish/Scottish seine, beam trawl) by fishing blocks between 1997 and 2016. The principal species targeted by this fishing method include, but not limited to, California halibut, groundfish, sea cucumber, pink shrimp, and ridgeback prawn.
The information in this dataset was prepared by the CDFW by extracting landings information from the Commercial Fisheries Information System (CFIS) in February 2017 and summarizing the weight by calendar year, gear group, and block for nearshore fishing blocks in the San Diego area. Landings are not provided for either the generic regional blocks (800 or 950) or the larger trawl blocks (1031 or 1032), as these are either spatially undefined or they span such a large region that the end user would not benefit from these data being mapped out.
