Description: This dataset shows the location and depth (in feet) of the deepest point in each of 2,176 inland lakes in Michigan. The attribute table contains the latitude and longitude of each point, in decimal degrees. The location of the deepest point in each lake was determined by finding the centroid of the deepest contour. Some lakes have multiple deep points if the lake has more than one basin with the same maximum depth. The depth contours were created based on lake-mapping surveys conducted since the 1930s by the Institute for Fisheries Research, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division. Deep points were determined using depth contours digitized from TIF images of the lake maps. As of 02/16/2012, the locations of deep points have been determined for 2,176 lakes. This dataset will be updated as additional lake depth maps become available.
