Service Description: Since 1980, thirteen underwater preserves have been established around the Great Lakes in areas with exceptional concentrations of shipwrecks. One, Thunder Bay, has now become a National Marine Sanctuary as well as a Michigan Underwater Preserve. The other twelve preserves are all-volunteer organizations that receive no regular financial support from the state. They work together as the Michigan Underwater Preserve Council (MUPC).
