Description: This dataset shows the Portneuf prior to installation of the Concrete Channel, though Levees had been introduced. It was created as one of a series of datasets to analyze how engineering of a riparian ecosystem changed the environment over time. It includes cut-off channels and meanders that could increase river length and vegetation habitat in this riparian ecosystem. The vector files representing the Portneuf River for the 1941 were derived from two air photos taken from 9/13/1941 and 11/15/1941 (???????????). The workflow for the 1941 dataset is as follows. A vector file was created and manually digitized from the raster. Oxbows (cut off meanders/channels) and river features were coded as a “type” attribute within the attribute table. From here the data was smoothed using the PAEK algorithm with a smoothing tolerance of 20 meters to eliminate sharp corners.
