Description: It was created as one of a series of datasets to analyze how engineering of a riparian ecosystem changed the environment over time. It includes cut-off channels and meanders that could increase river length and vegetation habitat in this riparian ecosystem. Though it’s coverage is small it is an important dataset because it depicts Pocatello’s River the year that concrete channelization was completed. The vector files representing the Portneuf River for the 1968 were derived from ortho-rectified data created using structure from motion technology (Pocatello, Idaho Historic Orthoimagery for 1968 (~1 meter resolution) doi:10.7923/G4J1012N). The workflow for the 1968 dataset is as follows. A vector file was created and manually digitized from the raster. Oxbows (cut off meanders/channels) and river features were coded as a “type” attribute within the attribute table. From here the data was smoothed using the PAEK algorithm with a smoothing tolerance of 20 meters to eliminate sharp corners.
