Service Description: This layer can be used for New Zealand river catchment overlays with other data such as landcover, geology, land use rainfall etc. Each polygon has a catchment name that is associated with the major river that is contained within each polygon. All these catchment polygons are sea-draining (parent) large catchments.

Description: A layer that was originally created from the New Zealand River Environment Classification (REC2 network) by dissolving local watersheds that comprised the major rivers of New Zealand. The catchments were processed up upstream tracing from the most downstream segment in the REC2 network.

the REC was originally created using a hydrological networking tools and a digital elevation model.
