Description: Seven wetland sites in New Zealand are protected under the Ramsar framework. The Convention on Wetlands is the intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources, adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and came into force in 1975. These 7 Ramsar Sites, covering 67,586 ha, have been designated as internationally important and work is ongoing to ensure their effective management.
