Description: This dataset contains representations of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus stops for the Spring 2017 schedule. The layer was developed by the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The primary input sources were the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) shapes, stops and stop-times files produced by the MBTA for each quarterly schedule. The shapes file provides a sequence of point coordinates for each route. The stops file provides the coordinates for each transit stop and station. A sequential list of stops for each for each route was extracted from the stop-times file, which provides scheduled departure times by stop for each trip. The stop lists by route were edited to match those obtained from the MBTA's schedule database. Description: The MBTA Rapid Transit Station layers represents the station stops on the five subway, streetcar/trolley and Silver Line bus lines in the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s rapid transit rail network. Stations are contained in a point feature class named MBTA_NODE. The five ‘T’ lines - Blue, Green, Orange, Red and Silver - are represented with linework in the layer MBTA_ARC. The layers were developed by the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS), with additional editing by MassGIS based on current information from mbta.com. The MBTA Commuter Rail lines are included in the TRAINS_ARC layer. It should be noted that the Silver Line actually consists of buses, not trains, but the line is included in this layer because the MBTA includes it as part of its Subway system map (see https://www.mbta.com/schedules/subway).

Description: The political boundary datalayer is a polygon representation of city and town boundaries created from arcs developed from survey coordinates extracted from the 68-volume Harbor and Lands Commission Town Boundary Atlas for the 351 communities (cities and towns) in Massachusetts. The Atlas was published in the early 1900's and is maintained by the Survey Section of Massachusetts Highway Department. For communities with a coastal boundary, MassGIS has collaborated with Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the Department of Environmental Protection to complete a 1:12000 scale coastline. The boundary for the coastline was defined as being the upland side of tidal flats and rocky inter-tidal zones. Note that the 351 communities are the official municipal names, not including "villages" or other sections of towns. This layer contains single-part polygons, in which islands or sections of municipalities separated by water are each represented by its own feature.

For communities with a coastal boundary, MassGIS has collaborated with Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the Department of Environmental Protection to complete a 1:12000 scale coastline. The boundary for the coastline was defined as being the upland side of tidal flats and rocky inter-tidal zones. Note that the 351 communities are the official municipal names, not including "villages" or other sections of towns. This layer contains single-part polygons, in which islands or sections of municipalities separated by water are each represented by its own feature.
