Description: The BIRDVOL2 depicts known waterfowl and shorebird habitat areas in twenty environmentally sensitive areas along the Southwestern, Southcentral and Southeast coast of Alaska. This data are a combination of duck and geese data (Southwest and part of Southcentral) or waterfowl and shorebird data ( parts of Southcentral and Southeast) digitized from mylar original maps from the Alaska Habitat Management Guides (1985 & 1986), special areas management plan maps and updated bluelines from area biologists (1997 and 1999). Data for the following categories were captured: Known spring concentrations - areas where concentrations of one or more species of waterfowl have been observed during spring migration for more than one year. Known spring and fall concentrations - areas where concentrations of one or more species of waterfowl or shorebird have been observed during spring and fall migration for more than one year. Known rearing concentrations - areas where concentrations of one or more species of rearing waterfowl have been observed during more than on year. Known nesting concentrations - areas where concentrations of one or more species of nesting waterfowl have been observed during more than one year. Known fall concentations - areas where concentrations of one or more species of waterfowl have been observed during fall migration for more than one year. Known molting concentrations - areas where concentrations of one or more species of molting waterfowl have been observed during more than one year. Waterfowl types are described as dabblers, divers and geese. Data exists only for those 1:250000 quads that contain 20 specific sensitive areas identified as MESAs containing bird data; the data are not continuous along the coast. For a complete list of MESA areas containing bird data in this coverage please see the metadata section on data quality. Data for five other MESAs containing waterfowl information are contained in coverages from EMCON and NOAA which are part of the MESA dataset.
