Description: The BEARVOL2 depicts polygon data for known brown and black bear habitat areas in ten environmentally sensitive areas along the Southwestern, Southcentral and Southeast coast of Alaska. This data was digitized from mylar original maps from the Alaska Habitat Management Guides (1985 & 1986), special areas management plans and updated bluelines from area biologists (1997). Data for the following categories were captured: For Southwest: Known concentrations along fish streams (Known feeding concentrations) - areas where concentrations of brown bears have been observed fishing during more than one year. Known spring concentrations - areas where concentrations of brown bear have been observed during more than one spring. Southcentral: Known spring concentrations - areas where concentrations of brown bear have been observed during more than one spring. Known fall concentrations - areas where concentrations of brown bear have been observed during more than one fall Known summer concentrations - areas where concentrations of brown bear have been observed during more than one summer. For Southeast: Known spring concentration areas - estuarine meadows, inland grasslands, and adjacent forests where concentrations of brown and black bears have been observed during the period April to June for more than one year. Known concentrations along fish streams - fish streams and adjacent forest where black bear and brown bear have been observed concentrated during anadromous fish runs for more than one year. Data exists only for those 1:250000 quads that contain ten specific sensitive areas identified as MESAs with bear data; data are not continuous along the coast. For a complete list of MESA areas with bear data please see the metadata section on data quality. Coverage BEARVOL2 depicts bear line data in three MESA areas.
