Service Description: Iowa State Rural Food Deserts by Tract. The rural Food Deserts mapping was achieved by determining the location of large food stores (defined as food stores with at least $2 million in annual sales and containing all the major food departments) and creating a 10-mile buffer around them. The areas of the low income census tracts that fell beyond this buffer were identified as rural Food Deserts.
