Service Description: This feature dataset was created to assist the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program (NPS ABPP) with their mission to promote the preservation of significant historic battlefields associated with wars on American soil. At the direction of Congress, the ABPP has identified, surveyed, and assessed significant sites associated with the American Revolution, the Civil War, and the War of 1812. Sites included in those reports, and in this feature dataset, are eligible for Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants.

Description: The Battlefield Boundary feature class represents the polygon locations of the “core areas” identified in the draft Update to the Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields, last revised in 2014,for the principal battlefields of the Civil War. The update of the report was authorized by the Civil War Battlefield Preservation Act of 2002.The draft report defined “core area” as the main area of fighting on the battlefield. Positions that delivered or received fire fall within the core area and are frequently described as “hallowed ground.” Feature level metadata entered in the attribute table provides additional information about the source and creation of each polygon. All data was edited for accuracy and consistency.
