Description: The Woodland Caribou Documented Occurrence public data product is composed of three shapefiles/feature classes:1. Woodland Caribou Occurrence - Sightings and Sign2. Woodland Caribou Occurrence - Telemetry3. Woodland Caribou Survey BoundariesThis dataset (Woodland Caribou Occurrence - Telemetry) contains a grid of 18 sq km hexagons (tessellation). The inclusion of a hexagon in the dataset indicates that one or more telemetry points have been documented in that area. Importantly, lack of caribou occurrence (e.g. no hexagon) should not be interpreted as absence of woodland caribou. Rather, data may not have been collected in these areas or incidental or other observations have not been received. Telemetry data represent the point location of a radio/ GPS collared caribou transmitted at regular intervals throughout the period of study (often up to several years). These data can represent thousands of locations of a single animal moving within its home range over multiple years). Typically, only a subset of the population are collared during a study and data only represent the occurrence of these individuals in the area. Unlike sightings and sign data, telemetry data represent the area used by individual collared animals, usually over multiple years. Signals are auto-transmitted, thus data are not dependent on human observation. These data may be expected to show a broader, more continuous occurrence pattern than a sightings and sign data set.Telemetry inputs include data provided by the Government of Alberta where the collar transmission locations occur within the province of Saskatchewan.
