Description:

Geographic representation of boundaries for Native American Treaties with the State of Michigan and the US to serve as a base map for viewing or creating GIS data.

Boundaries for Native American Treaties with the State of Michigan and the US were created from Treaty lines based on old maps and treaty descriptions to illustrate spatial relationships of statewide Treaty Boundaries. Where a treaty is bounded by Great Lakes shoreline, the shoreline of the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) 1:24,000 waterbody feature was used to represent the shoreline. The treaty boundaries were clipped by the State of Michigan boundary, created from TIGER county files and the International Boundary Commission (IBC) international boundary dataset.

Use with caution. Boundaries of 1836 Treaty near Alpena and Escanaba have been disputed by 1836 Tribes, without resolution through the court or negotiation among governments. Designed for Cartographic purposes to illustrate spatial relationships of statewide Treaty Boundaries. Treaty lines are based on old maps and treaty descriptions used by Jim Ekdahl during negotiations in the 1990s.

Description: The layer was created by aggregating the 10-minute grid cells (v3) for the Michigan waters of Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Huron to match existing GIS representations (see maps 4-6 in the 2000 Consent Decree). Whole 10-minute grids from the v3 10-minute grid GIS layer were assigned lake whitefish management units and aggregated using the Dissolve tool in ArcGIS 10.5. Units that are adjacent to the St. Mary’s River (WFS-08, WFH-02, and WFH-03) were clipped to end at the boundary of the St. Mary’s River as described in the 2000 Consent Decree. Great lakes shorelines were updated with the NHDPlus HR polygons. Layer last updated 11/16/2023.

Description: This GIS dataset depicts Lake Trout Management Unit boundaries which are described in FO-200. To create the GIS layer, whole grids from the v3.3 Michigan Great Lakes Grids GIS layer were assigned to Lake Trout Management Units to match boundaries in existing GIS layers (see maps 1-3 in the 2000 Consent Decree) which are the same as the boundaries described in FO-200. The Dissolve tool in ArcGIS 10.5 was used to dissolve the Michigan Great Lakes Grid layer (v3.3) to create lake trout management unit boundaries that were then bounded by waterbody descriptions as follows: 1) The MI-8 and MH-1 statistical districts were clipped to end at the boundary of the St. Mary’s River as described in the 2000 Consent Decree. 2) MH-6 was clipped to end at the Blue Water Bridge as described in Fisheries Order 200, and 3) “MICH” in Lake Erie was modified to end at the Lake Erie/Detroit River boundary as described in the 2016-2017 Michigan Fishing Guide. Note that all Lake Trout Management Units consist of whole or clipped (as described above) 10-minute grids. Also note that Lake Trout Management Units are almost exactly the same as current statistical district boundaries where the units overlap with the districts. Also note that the MH-1 boundary in this dataset was altered slightly to limit the extent to the boundary of grid lh_308 (and no longer extend into grids lh_309 & lh_209).Shorelines updated to NHDPlus HR polygons.
